Recipe: Pumpkin soup with coconut, lemongrass and chilli

Around this time of year, like a malevolent cuckoo clock, most of us get hit with some tedious variation of the winter cold. Being sick and inactive doesn’t suit me. Friends know to avoid me for at least 72 hours, as I get pretty intolerable; sort of like an angry tiger in an apron. My usual plan of attack is hardly original.

Restaurant Review: Leinster Rd Bistro, Christchurch

Calm. Quiet. These are the first two things I jotted down on a Wednesday night visit to the Leinster Rd Bistro. It reads a bit boringly doesn’t it? But believe me this is high praise.

It had been a frazzled kind of Wednesday, one of those days when we had too many balls in the air. The night was wet, the bistro was hard to spot among all the medical buildings, and we’d had to circle around trying to find a park.

The last thing in the world we wanted was to end up in a place with “doof doof” music thumping out of a speaker just above our heads.

The cruel disease that has taken my young mother's mind

My mother’s grey-blue eyes are beautiful but they are blank. They stare right through me, look past me, failing to respond. For the past two years, my 70-year-old mother hasn’t known me. Lying in a chair in a Napier resthome, she is spoon-fed her meals by caregivers who are the human equivalent of angels. Her nappy is changed. Do it better than your local: how to cook the perfect hot chip

In the annals of world cuisine, has there ever been a thing so abject yet so wonderful as the chip? The chip – the hot chip, not the crisp, its bastard cousin once removed – is essential. Christchurch brewery Harrington's marks 25 years in the businees

New Zealand’s largest family-owned brewery, Harrington’s of Christchurch, celebrated its 25th birthday last week. Having owned and run pubs for almost two decades, John and Val Harrington were exasperated by the Lion/DB duopoly and decided to start their own brewery. The Harringtons’ first brewery, a 1000-litre system made up of old dairy vessels, was installed at the Kilmore St site of Christchurch’s oldest brewery, Ward’s. Today, that same site – minus many of the original brewery buildings, which were destroyed in the earthquakes – is home to Pomeroy’s pub and Stainless Brewing Company.

How a donut ruined my Paleo diet

The first thing I threw out was the 1kg box of Weet-Bix. There was only a third of a packet left so I didn’t feel too bad binning it. All the other cereals had to go too, also pasta, couscous, lentils, bread, Shrewsbury biscuits, four cans of baked beans and a 2-litre bottle of soybean oil.

Restaurant Review: Madam Kwong's Restaurant, Christchurch

The big Madam Kwong building on Blenheim Rd has always fascinated me. Such an odd industrial setting for a Chinese restaurant. But I always carried on past because it’s set well back from the road and you have to break out of the traffic stream to get there. You don’t abandon your lane lightly on Blenheim Rd.

'Slapped cheek' syndrome: a common rash in kids, more sinister in pregnant women

In 1974, while screening blood donations for hepatitis B, an Australian virologist accidentally discovered a new parvovirus (parvo meaning “small”). Many other parvoviruses that cause infection in animals were known, but this was the first to be found in humans.

Recipe: Mocha cake with coffee syrup

Turn a favourite chocolate cake (we used a flourless one) into a mocha variation by adding 1-2 tablespoons of strongly brewed espresso coffee to the recipe (this is also a good way to enrich the flavour and colour of a dark fruit cake).

Virtual vs real: Which workout works the best?

When you hear the phrase “virtual workout” you probably think of futuristic virtual reality headsets and wires attached to your pulse points, but realistically a virtual workout is much more low-fi than that.

Do women's periods really sync when they spend time together?

It is a popular belief that women who live together synchronise their menstrual cycles, and that it’s mediated by their pheromones – the airborne molecules that enable members of the same species to communicate non-verbally.

Tara Moss: 'I wear a corset for pleasure, but also to avoid pain'
