Under the Grill: Sydney-based French chef Guillaume Brahimi

Guillaume Brahimi is an acclaimed French-born chef who trained under the legendary Joel Robuchon before moving to Australia in the 1990s. He now owns the two-hatted Sydney fine-dining restaurant Guillaume Paddington, as well as the three Bistro Guillaume eateries in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. Brahimi is coming to New Zealand to share his talents at a very special dinner at Huka Lodge on October 1. Hosted by Clive Paton and Phyll Pattie, the founders of celebrated Martinborough vineyard Ata Rangi, the Ata Rangi Big Red Dinner will showcase the winery's 2013 releases – the Juliet Syrah, Célèbre and signature Pinot Noir. Brahimi will be cooking a fabulous feast to complement these very special wines.

Restaurant review: Delhi Belly, Christchurch

Delhi Belly – what a fantastic name. The sheer ballsiness to name an Indian restaurant after slang for food poisoning is inspiring. I’ve got no jokes about it, I’m sure they have all been said long ago. And no, there was no post-meal queasiness.

Is the pain of high-intensity intervals worth the gain? That may be up to you

My first Orangetheory class started with several short bursts of running on a treadmill and ended in the same place, with a minute of hard running followed by another of all-out effort. In between heart-thumping intervals on the treadmill and a rowing machine, there were multiple rounds of squats, weights, side-crunches and more. After an hour, I was dripping in sweat and, according to my instructor, Natalie, poised to burn fat for hours afterward.

Is your child snoring? It may be a sign of a serious sleep issue

Snoring can be a normal symptom of a cold or virus in children. But when snoring persists and children have difficulty sleeping, parents should take their children to a doctor to look for signs of more serious conditions.

Snoring occurs in about 20 per cent of children and is most common among children between 2 and 6, says Dr Marcel Deray, a paediatric neurologist in the US.

About 10 per cent of children who suffer from snoring have some sort of obstructive sleep apnoea, a sleep disorder that leads to pauses in breathing throughout the night.

“That’s the peak time that kids have enlarged adenoids and tonsils, which is the main cause of snoring and sleep apnoea,” Deray said.

TranzAlpine Scooter Safari a tribute to cancer patients

Catherine Lilley died of breast cancer on November 15, 2008. She had married her soulmate, Jim Lilley, just the day before. This year, Lilley will complete his fourth TranzAlpine Scooter Safari in her memory.

He has done something each year since Catherine’s death to remember her, simultaneously raising money for cancer charities. First, it was the Relay for Life, then he heard about the safari.

A lifelong motorbike nut, the safari was the perfect fit for Lilley and his passionate crusade to support the victims of cancer.

Both have less salt than an average packet of instant noodles.

Cafe chat: What it takes to be voted Christchurch's best cafe

There was lots of love showered on Sydenham cafe Hello Sunday at the Christchurch Hospitality Awards. It won the Press People’s Choice award for best cafe, the hospo industry’s award for best cafe and the supreme award for best establishment. The cafe’s owned by Christopher Penny, Yasmeen Clark and Jonathan Spark. The head chef is Sam Stewart and the barista is Steve Hill.

I asked Spark why the cafe in the old Sunday School building has struck such a chord? What’s the secret? He points to a team that cares about each other and the customers. But the location is also a biggie. “We took a run down 1870s Post Office-turned-Sunday School and gave her back her personality,” he says. The interior design was a very personal approach by the owners that gives it an original feel. "We really just listened to the building, she had her own story to tell,“ Spark says.

Neat places to enjoy Mexican food

Good Mexican food is not always easy to find, despite its growing popularity, and anyone who has been to Mexico knows how common it is for restaurants to poorly imitate their cuisine.

Mexican food should be fresh, vibrant, and full of flavour – although this does not always mean spicy. Many traditional Mexican dishes have intense flavours that are built on mild herbs, citrus flavours, and fresh vegetables, which won’t leave the mouth burning. Regardless of what ingredients are used to create the dishes, if it isn’t fresh, the flavours won’t be authentic.

Luckily, Christchurch is becoming a haven for Mexican food lovers, with many restaurants committed to serving up only the most authentic of dishes. Neat Places looks at five of the best Mexican food spots in Christchurch.

Dr Libby: 10 foods that help sugar cravings

Sugar has been a topic of much debate over the past few years.

Countless people make great food choices for breakfast and lunch and then at 3 o'clock in the afternoon or after dinner, they feel like someone else has taken over their body. The desire for and subsequent consumption of sweet food can take hold without you really knowing why or what to do about it.

Too many people reach for sweet food that doesn’t serve their health; in fact it may contain substances that actually have the potential to take away from their health, yet they feel powerless to live any differently, having tried to change their sweet food habits many times.
