Dr Tom: It's not what happens to you in life, but how you deal with it that counts

As our ice-strengthened ship grinds though ice-clogged passages embedded with polar bear prints, it is time for reflection. We are in the Russian Arctic with Heritage Expeditions doing the Northern Sea route from Murmansk to Anadyr. As much as the landscape and wildlife is remarkable on this trip, so are the passengers – an eclectic bunch of explorers who have achieved much in their lives.

Dear Mrs Salisbury: He's a porn addict and I had no idea

QUESTION: A friend from work came around recently to sort out a go-slow on our computer and I noticed he became really uncomfortable. Fibromyalgia, the misunderstood chronic illness

In childhood photographs, you can pick me out by the dark circles under my eyes. Insomnia would probably be one of my first memories, had sleeplessness not eroded my ability to form them. Should we eat our way out of the jellyfish problem?

With jellyfish getting ready to invade our beaches again this summer, even scientists think it would be a good idea to start eating the floating stingers.

Niwa emeritus researcher Dennis Gordon says he’s all for turning them into food to help cut back numbers.

“Jellyfish are mostly water anyway, but the bowl, the jelly part, has quite a bit of protein in it. If it holds together well enough, you could probably eat the local ones, but i don't know if there is a market out there.”

He’s eaten jellyfish in Taiwan and says “it’s not bad”. “It was flavoured and stringy like noodles.”

Dr Tom: Learning and connecting with others are fundamental to wellbeing

It is hard to describe the feeling of joining a ship on a journey to uncharted waters, but I will do my best. This trip takes me from Murmansk in the far west of Russia to Anadyr in the far east, just off the North Pole and through the heart of polar bear and walrus wilderness.

World's first chicken nugget 'tasting room' opens in US

The story sounds like the plot of a B-grade comedy: a chef who worked for a decade at Chez Panisse, a pioneering US restaurant that reminded Americans that ingredients actually have a season, decides to launch what she and her partner call the world’s first chicken nugget tasting room.

Egg-donor mum 'never wanted a cent' for gift of life

A Wairarapa woman who gifted her eggs to allow another couple to have children says she never expected or wanted a cent for her donation.

“I would have done it for nothing. I went into this thinking there would be no money at all. The fact that I was able to cover my petrol costs coming to appointments was just a bonus. I don’t think money should be a driver for being a donor," Heidi Holbrook said.

She talked about her experience helping others have a family as fertility specialists look at ways to tackle the growing list of women needing sperm or egg donations to allow them to conceive.

While a leading clinic says modest payments and imported sperm and eggs might help, a woman who was conceived using donated sperm has warned against changes which might "commercialise” children

New Zealand politicians share their post-election celebration meals

Seven weeks of non-stop campaigning, New Zealand’s political leaders won’t have had time to sit down and enjoy a proper meal.

Come September 24, the results will be in and the winners and losers will either celebrate victory or commiserate a loss.

How will they celebrate if they get what they want? Could it be a bucket of fried chicken, a bacon sandwich or a degustation at a fancy restaurant with a bottle of New Zealand’s finest wine? We ask some of our political leaders, and most of them play ball.

The secret ingredient to health and a long life? Try marriage

Lonely singles have twice as many heart attacks and are four times less likely to survive them than people in happy relationships. Cancer, strokes and other diseases are also more common.

It’s why Kiwi-born professor of medicine at Monash University Merlin Thomas picks being in a relationship as the most important health tip when it comes to to living to a long age.

He’s the author of The Longevity List, a new book on the science behind living a long life. He calls his last chapter Do I really have to find love? the most important.

Thomas says love is critical when it comes to longevity. “At every stage of our adult lives, it seems that those people in a stable relationship are less likely to die than those who are out on their own.

Does the change of season really make you sick?

Sniffles and colds have broken out across the country as spring set in, but don’t blame the change of season, the experts say.

General Practitioners Council chair Dr Jan White says: "I think we are seeing a big, big peak at the end of winter that we usually see earlier in winter.“

She says winter was quieter than usual, and it’s like the tail has "come to beat us”.

“I can’t explain the delayed emergence. It’s not usual to see a peak like this at the change of seasons. I think it’s just one of those weird old things that happen with illnesses.”

Butter's not a baddie anymore, but is margarine healthier?
