Dear Mrs Salisbury: Why is sex so painful for me?

ADVICE: I am 25 years old and have been with my partner for 8 years now. Around the 1 year mark, I started getting a deep pain during sex. At first it wasn’t too bad with it only happening every so often, but over 7 years has got so bad it happens every time without fail and I am avoiding sex and anything to do with it. I have been to a few doctors, been tested, Checked for anything and everything that could be causing it. Nothing pathological has come up, which is good. I visited a gynaecologist for the last time this year who said it probably was a combination of a low cervix and a sensitive cervix which is caused by being on the pill. Other research by me suggests it could be stress held in the pelvic muscles. Long story short I am now almost traumatised by sex as it has hurt for so long I just can’t bring myself to do it at all. We want to have kids in the next couple of years but of course you need regular sex for that. We’re almost at breaking point. I hope you can help me.

Caesarean section versus natural birth – an obstetrician examines a new review

Births by caesarean section are rising, worldwide. The latest figures (2016) show that 25 per cent of births in Western Europe were by caesarean delivery; in North America it was 32 per cent, and in South America 41 per cent. Given these statistics, it’s not surprising that people are interested in new evidence that looks at the potential harms (and benefits) of this procedure. However, I read the latest review of the evidence with mixed feelings.

Dr Tom: Health and safety are inextricably linked

When I was 18 years old I joined the New Zealand Forest Service. Bright-eyed and bushy tailed I was sent into the bush to plant, prune and fell trees. Out of the pine plantation forests I was privileged to be dropped by helicopter into some of our country’s most pristine wilderness environments, the headwaters of the mighty Rangitikei river. I was living the dream counting plants and deer droppings and my wellbeing was at an all time high. It was 1980, carless days and carefree nights as I watched the stars unpolluted by lights and meteorites magically skid across the milky way.

A Christchurch man who had a lightbulb explode in his face when he turned his lamp on feels lucky he didn’t suffer an eye injury.

Stringer said it was frightening. “I got a couple of scratches on my forehead, but it could have blinded somebody. And this glass is really fine.”

Dr Cathy Stephenson: The hot weather isn't good news for psoriasis sufferers

For many of us the last few weeks of amazing weather have been a gift. A chance to eat outside, swim at the local beach, and wear those summery clothes that are usually confined to the back of the wardrobe. But if you suffer from chronic skin problems, this type of weather can be anything but enjoyable – warm and sweaty skin is often more itchy, causing flare-ups of conditions like eczema, and the thought of exposing your skin to others at a beach when you have a visible rash can be unbearably embarrassing.

Eleanor Black: I don't want to be forever young

OPINION: Chances are decent that you and I will reach 100. That’s what medical researchers like Kiwi-born Professor Merlin Thomas, author of The Longevity List, say. It’s no pipe dream. As a woman born in 1974, my odds of making a century are 20 per cent, according to a table generated by Britain’s Department of Work and Pensions.

Know your còsagach from your lagom, hygge and wabi-sabi

The Danish concept of hygge and the Swede’s lagom have dominated design trends in the last two years. But now another northern nation has decided to jump on the bandwagon, and from bonny Scotland comes còsagach.

It’s a Gaelic word, described as the feeling of being snug, sheltered and warm. Còsagach is all about embracing the outdoors from the indoors. Scottish tourism body, VisitScotland, who identified the trend, says it can be achieved in all seasons.

Like hygge, it encourages being cosy, so in terms of interior design this means natural textures and hues, a fireplace and snug blankets.

Còsagach joins the likes of other international concepts and ways of living such as wabi-sabi, ikigai (both Japanese) and gezelligheid (Dutch) influencing interior design.

New Zealand seafood festivals to bookmark in 2018

As an island nation, it’s easy to take for granted the abundance and accessibility of food lurking on and beyond our coastline. And yet kaimoana - slimey, briny, chewy, flaky - has sustained human life in New Zealand for as long as we have tread here. Absorbing the ocean in its very fibres, seafood is a hallmark of Kiwi culture. Here are the mustn’t-miss showcases of marine cuisine around the country this year.

Dr Cathy Stephenson: What to do with your unused medication

If I take a peek in my first aid cabinet, it is fair to say that it’s somewhat shambolic. There are antibiotics in there that my dad left behind on his last visit; pain relief from my daughter’s broken ankle three years ago; bottles of gaviscon half-used and no doubt well past their expiry date; and various open packets of vitamins and other supplements, dating back to who knows when.

‘Blue Monday’ is a hoax – but it could become the most depressing day of the year

Over the past decade, hordes of innocent people have bought the idea that the third Monday of January is the most depressing day of the year – despite there being no scientific evidence to support it. While retailers, beauty salons, travel agents and many other commercial bodies have capitalised on the concept, originally conceived by a PR company, mental health professionals have despaired. That’s because, to many people, the Monday blues is a reality.

New study finds ‘baby brain’ is real, but we’re still not sure what causes it

So-called “baby brain” refers to increased forgetfulness, inattention, and mental “fogginess” reported by four out of five pregnant women. These changes in brain function during pregnancy have long been recognised in midwifery folklore, but our new study has confirmed "baby brain" is a very real phenomenon, and also affects several cognitive areas.

Dr Tom: Go for shade, learn from the burn

Summer is definitely here and so is barbecue season. Unfortunately, many of us are barbecuing our bodies as the sun’s rays fry our skin and its tissues beneath. Cells begin what is called apoptosis, cell suicide as proteins are cooked like sausages on the hotplate. The redness is caused by dilation of blood vessels which can peak up to 24 hours after sun exposure. A cascade of inflammation and pain is set up, which is not only uncomfortable but has potential long-term effects.

2018: New year, old me

OPINION: Almost two weeks into the new year, many of us will be looking for absolution rather than resolution. Absolution for the return to bad habits after those New Year good intentions fall by the wayside, absolution from continued overindulgence (despite vowing to keep your body a temple of clean eating), and absolution for the smarty comment made about so-and-so’s bikini on New Year’s Day after promising the night before to be less of a biatch.
