Restaurant review: Smith the Grocer in Wellington

Like the Old Bank Arcade itself, Smith the Grocer is about nostalgia. In this case, it’s for the likes of KM Black in Nelson in the 1950s, where apron-wearing grocers scaled the wall behind the counter with ladders to gather from a surprising range of luxury tinned goods. These included black Perigord truffles, pate de foie gras, frogs’ legs, crab, turtle soup, smoked oysters, Meredith’s brand of toheroa, Lupi olive oil, green and black olives, and – most importantly back then –  tinned fillets of anchovy.
