How to hide a hangover

DIY health retreats for any budget

ADVICE: I have had a very hectic year. I have been focused on getting a promotion at work and with the long hours and networking events, I haven’t had much time for exercise. I have been drinking too much, and eating hot chips. Lots of my girlfriends are kicking off the year with health retreats in Bali, but I can’t really afford this. How can I get the same restart benefits without spending a fortune or even leaving my home in NZ?

How dogs evolved to take over the world

OPINION: On the drive back from the river Pippi was lying on the back seat. This was unusual because she prefers to sit in the car, but she’d got so tired from racing along the stopbanks and dragging sticks out of the fast river she was giving all legs a rest.

Then she started sneezing in an odd way, pulling her face to one side, grinning a bit maniacally, then snooosh.

Pull over, pull over, said my wife. And I did, and we waited until Pippi had cleared the bit of river silt she’d licked off a paw, then looked up blankly “what?”

It occurred to me while parked by the side of the of the road waiting for a dog to stop sneezing that we might not be so different to all the other nutty dog lovers out there. The ones I sometimes smile at.

One mum's answer to feeding hungry Kiwi kids

OPINION: I can’t believe that in the friendly, caring New Zealand that I call home, there are more than 295,000 children living below the income poverty line according to Unicef. These children living in poverty are at a high risk of not having access to fresh, nutritious food.

Why has this been allowed to happen in NZ? Since when did we, as a society, turn a blind eye to children being sent to school with little or no food?

It’s very easy to point the finger at parents or the government. That gives us an easy way out: ‘not my children, not my problem’. But these are all of our children - they are the future of this country and we are failing them. A child has no choice, they have no voice.

How can we expect children to learn, develop, behave and focus at school if they are running on empty? As a former PE teacher, I have seen firsthand the daily struggles these children have. Arriving for a day of learning with no lunch box or, at best, a bag of chips and a fizzy drink is not setting them up for success.

Marlborough Farmers' Market in the midst of change as it grows and develops

The Florida Project: Poverty Porn? Or 2017's best movie?

American critics have fallen over themselves to shower praise upon The Florida Project, a story told mostly through the eyes of young kids even as it’s about the most adult themes imaginable: poverty, sex work, drugs and domestic violence.

“Raw, exuberant and utterly captivating," Justin Chang wrote of this Day-Glo-hued slice of dirty realism in the Los Angeles Times. "Risky and revelatory”, said A.O. Scott in The New York Times. “One of the finest films of 2017,” said Ty Burr in The Boston Globe.

Dr Cathy Stephenson: My Christmas wish list ...

Every year since they were old enough to hold a crayon, my children have written a letter to Father Christmas, informing him (politely) as to what they might hope to find in their stocking on Christmas morning. I have gently reminded them to not just “ask” for things but to also enquire about how FC is getting on, whether or not the reindeer have had a good season, and how Mrs Claus copes with all the stress at this time of year. I have some wonderful photocopied versions of these buried away somewhere – the originals, of course, are somewhere in the North Pole, probably piled up in Santa’s office.

Plating Christmas with food stylist perfection

Christmas is a holiday steeped in layers of tradition, family history and of course food. But it’s not just what is on the menu that makes or breaks festivities, how you present your Christmas feast to family and friends is equally as important. Getting it right will most certainly guarantee to make your day memorable.

Losing weight can be daunting any time of year, let alone during the festive season. However, you may be more equipped for weight loss than you think, especially if you know how to budget. Summer is here and my ears are burning. Not because someone maybe talking about me or because they are sunburnt but because I have swimmer’s ear. Kiwi food writer remembers her best and worst Christmas dinners

Lucy Corry’s 2012 Christmas started with popping candy chocolates out of the stockings and ended with summer pudding. But life can derail even the most organised cook. Here, Lucy shares some bittersweet festive memories.

Recipe: Sam Mannering's super-simple canapes

I worry that the very mention of the word “canape” hints at the promise of patronising events with bad bubbly and complicated-looking things in vol-au-vents. I do my best to counter that by being as simple as possible. This recipe may seem too easy, but, at this time of year, I don’t think that’s a bad thing. Asparagus halves wrapped in prosciutto and grilled off. Oysters in the half-shell with lemon. Oatcakes with a bit of blue cheese and pear. Thin strips of rare cold roast beef rolled up with a bit of horseradish and herb. Cubes of roast pork belly with a dollop of hoi-sin. It needn’t be complicated.
