Meet the man getting Pacific communities moving

Pacific people living in New Zealand have among the highest rates of obesity and diabetes, but the Pacific community is working hard to change that. Every week, Latu To'omaga runs exercise classes called Pacific Fiva. He says a lot is being done to educate Pacific people about the importance of exercise and nutrition, and believes those negative statistics will change for the next generation of Pacific children.

A couple of years ago I was working for Les Mills and some of the top gyms in town, but I kept thinking I really want to reach out to Pacific people. I wanted to take my skills home. So I came to Cannon’s Creek, Porirua, and asked the manager of Pacific Health if I could teach some classes there, and she said “Yay! The prodigal son has returned!”
