Almost six years ago, Rachel Segal was 28, working in digital marketing in Vancouver, Canada, when she had what she now calls an “epiphany”. She had always been career driven and her big-city lifestyle was a picture of success. Looking back, it would have be easier if she was satisfied with that life, Segal says, where laundry was sent out, food was ordered in, and her weekends were spent browsing at Anthropologie.
While Vancouver is ranked one of the world’s most liveable cities, it’s also one of the most expensive property markets. Despite working long hours, Segal knew home ownership was unlikely. “Why even bother?”, she thought, as she spent her disposable income wining and dining. Her partner, Scott, was in the same industry but worked for himself, as a freelancer. If they both went freelance, they realised, they wouldn’t need to live downtown.
