Cafe chat: What it takes to be voted Christchurch's best cafe

There was lots of love showered on Sydenham cafe Hello Sunday at the Christchurch Hospitality Awards. It won the Press People’s Choice award for best cafe, the hospo industry’s award for best cafe and the supreme award for best establishment. The cafe’s owned by Christopher Penny, Yasmeen Clark and Jonathan Spark. The head chef is Sam Stewart and the barista is Steve Hill.

I asked Spark why the cafe in the old Sunday School building has struck such a chord? What’s the secret? He points to a team that cares about each other and the customers. But the location is also a biggie. “We took a run down 1870s Post Office-turned-Sunday School and gave her back her personality,” he says. The interior design was a very personal approach by the owners that gives it an original feel. "We really just listened to the building, she had her own story to tell,“ Spark says.
