Couple's restaurant dream comes true with opening of The Villa in Wakefield

Chasing a long-held dream of opening their own business, hospitality specialists Michael Meissner and Marleen Mandok quit the bustle of Auckland and moved to Wakefield, near Nelson.

Trained in their native Germany as a chef and in hotel management respectively, Meissner and Mandok have poured their years of industry expertise into The Villa and the adjacent Daily Exchange fine food store in the heart of the Tasman district village.

Open since early February, The Villa offers a range of cabinet food along with coffee and an a la carte lunch menu that includes Hungarian beef goulash soup, duck confit and a spinach bread dumpling.

The Daily Exchange store opened in early April with a selection of imported and local goods including Italian vincotto (a dark, sweet cooked wine), German marzipan, Swiss chocolate and French cheeses. Products made locally include olive oil, shortbread and honey.
