The vegan mother who eats her own afterbirth

Hamilton mum Angelique Jones is both a sworn vegan and could technically be called a cannibal. She sees no contradiction.

The 28-year-old ate her placenta – that large fleshy organ with DNA from both parents of the fetus it nourishes in the womb – after giving birth to baby Cole eight months ago.

Along with road-kill, placenta is one of the very few vegan-friendly meats.

Jones ate it to stave off postnatal depression and says it worked. Scientists remain dubious, but that hasn’t stopped a word-of-mouth and celebrity-fuelled surge in the practice over the last year.
