We ignore this type of exercise but there is good reason why we shouldn't

The humble push-up is often underrated when compared with racier forms of exercise, but the old faithful may pave the way to a longer life.

New research, from the University of Sydney, looking at more than 80,000 adults, compared different forms of exercise and found that those who did strength-based exercise just twice a week had a 23 per cent reduction in risk of premature death by any means, and a 31 per cent reduction in cancer-related death.

On the other hand, a reduced risk of cancer-related death did not apply to those who only met the WHO aerobic guidelines of 150 minutes a week and not the twice-weekly strength training recommendation (which was only introduced in 2010).

While strength training has received some attention lately for its important role in muscle maintenance, metabolismbone density as we age and cognitive function there was “a gap in the literature”.

Why pushups are your new favourite exercise

Push-ups - better than a bench press (yes really)
Great workouts that don’t need a gym membership

“There was very, very little research looking at the association between participation in strength-promoting exercise and long-term outcomes related to mortality,” said lead author Emmanuel Stamatakis from the School of Public Health and the Charles Perkins Centre.

For the study, published on Wednesday in the American Journal of Epidemiology, Stamatakis and his team looked at different types of strength-based exercise including using machines or free weights at the gym as well as bodyweight exercises â€“ sit-ups, push-ups, pull-ups – that people can do from home.

On average, those who regularly participated in strength training, did two sessions a week totalling 50 to 60 minutes and the researchers adjusted for other “confounding” lifestyle factors such as diet and demographics.

“A very encouraging finding and a finding I’m very keen to promote more was that there was not much difference [between gym-based or home-based strength exercise], the association was pretty much the same,” Stamatakis said.

Is it really that bad to be addicted to exercise?

ADVICE: I have always been into exercising, but over the winter I have really become hooked. I go to the gym every morning and if I don’t get my 10,000 steps I walk around my house til I do. I am always checking the timetable and sometimes cancel plans with friends if they clash with my fitness schedule. I’m feeling great - but is there a limit to my exercise addiction? What is the problem if I’m looking great?

Dr Cathy Stephenson: Why do I get so bloated all the time?

The answer is not always straightforward – most of us will suffer from bloating or distension of our abdomen from time to time, but for some people it is persistent, or severe, and causes significant distress. Very occasionally, it can signify something serious going on, but more often than not it doesn’t and a simple change in diet or lifestyle can help.

A hundred years ago, zinc was abundant in many soils. Nowadays, most soils in the world are zinc deficient, except for soils predominantly from biodynamic farms. This means that, where once fruit and vegetables, and even grain-based foods such as breads and cereals, provided us with a small, steady top-up of zinc, the zinc levels in many of the foods we eat today are inadequate to avoid deficiency.

Jonathan Gold shares his thoughts on New Zealand's food

I sat in the lobby bar of the Intercontinental Wellington nursing a negroni and waiting for Los Angeles Times food writer and columnist Jonathan Gold to join me. That morning I had read an article on Stuff by Sarah Catherall that quoted Gold as saying, “There seems to be a lot of British comfort food, circa 1968”. The thought that an influencer such as Gold might take that opinion of New Zealand food and share it with his global audience played heavily on my mind.

Amisfield chef Vaughan Mabee relishes winter's end

The snow is lingering longer than Vaughan Mabee cares for. The air is frigid over Lake Hayes and Central Otago’s peaks are still capped. Mabee is tiring of winter – he’s looking forward to find what spring and summer will bring to his ever-changing menu.

The hyper-seasonal food that goes into Mabee’s kitchen at Amisfield, a two-hatted winery bistro located just outside of Queenstown, is limited to a relatively lean list of wild and wintry ingredients. Winter’s menus have been based largely on meat and fish, alongside pickled or fermented vegetables from last season. The animals are sourced by local fishermen, hunters and divers, and the meat is often aged in Amisfield’s downstairs cellar.

While these dishes certainly have been popular, spring and summer herald totally new creations. Some ingredients will be exciting and new to the chef, others he knows will sprout where he last saw them. A lot will come from the restaurant’s garden too.

Mabee is hankering for some asparagus, and he’s anxious to see what the overdue season brings.

Labneh is a thick yoghurt cheese that can be used for both savoury and sweet dishes. I use a natural unsweetened yoghurt, ideally a Greek style as it takes less time to drain. The salt is essential for preserving the labneh for any length of time – although if you’re planning to use it within the week, you could omit it. The leftover whey can be used in smoothies, pancake batter and the like.

Have you tried? Black garlic

Black garlic is garlic that has been slowly dried in a temperature-controlled environment, which gives it a deeply caramelised and savoury flavour. Raw garlic can be pungent and strong in flavour, but here the process mellows and subdues the garlic. It can be added to sauces, vinaigrettes and soups, and is delicious smeared on bread as is or with a creamy cheese.

Career in fashion gives way to wood for Courtney Petley

For hours each week, Courtney Petley can be found on her porch. Braving the cold or basking in the sun, she slowly whittles away at wooden shapes with a blade and sandpaper. As hours go by, the shapes emerge.

Restaurant review: Black Barn Bistro

There’s something awe-inspiring about sitting at a table in a hilltop restaurant, looking out over a trellis of leafy grape vines to vineyards and farmland and beyond to the rolling hills of western Hawke’s Bay. This wonderful view is a major drawcard of the Black Barn dining room. Even after dark, when the vista has disappeared, ambient lighting provides a sense of being elevated above the world.

Ever-changing menus entice the foodies at Huka Lodge

As you hurtle towards the end of another year and look back at the massive amount of hours worked, the perilous projects you have driven and the colossal amount of tasks you’ve completed, I’d say you deserve a treat. Pure luxury, unforgettable atmosphere and, if you like it that way, absolute privacy. And yes, you will pay a price that is around four figures depending on the season, so let’s just get that out of the way upfront.

Dr Tom: Obstructive Sleep Apnoea - it might be why you're tired all the time

Are you tired of being tired? Fatigue is normal after prolonged mental or physical exertion but it is neither safe or sustainable. Many people understandably self-diagnose fatigue and self-treat without a proper diagnosis. One of the more common dangerous causes of fatigue is called sleep apnoea. The word apnoea means “without breath”. Sleep apnoea is then defined as the cessation of breathing for more than 10 seconds. There are a number of causes but Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is the most common.

I’ve always wondered: What’s behind the belly button?

Our belly button is a reminder for life that once we were attached to and dependent on our mother, floating like a little astronaut in our liquid universe. The cord, and in particular the remaining belly button, has always been fascinating to humans and we still embark on some interesting traditions to celebrate and aid the physical separation of the umbilical cord.

Recipe: Sam Mannering's courgette, prosciutto, mint, red onion and pine nut borek

I’m fascinated by the way food evolves as you move from country to country. The use of paper-thin pastry stuffed with any manner of treats, whether sweet or savoury, has its origins in Turkey. The Ottomans are thought to have invented filo for the sweet flaky joy that is baklava. What we know as filo or phyllo, and less familiarly as flia or yufka appears in all sorts of forms across Eastern Europe, around the Mediterranean and even in Northern Africa. I’ve had variations of this dish in Morocco, in Croatia and even in Austria.

Dr Cathy Stephenson: How to get kids eating a healthy lunch

My brood eat well, and are healthy most of the time - but I am in awe of families who have the time, energy and resources to prepare intricate lunchbox delights for their kids, every day. Like other parents, I lack time in the mornings - I juggle walking the dog, feeding the chickens, racing to the dairy to pick up more milk, finding hair ties and lost homework books, and hopefully running a brush through my own hair before going to work.
