“We forget that we are all biodegradable. Wanting more is what’s making us sick.”
So says Ruby Wax, alongside many other aphoristic smackdowns, in her new book How to Be Human: The Manual.
It’s a beguiling blend of spirituality, platitudinous common sense and factual information, all sewn together by Wax’s easy wit. “Many people I know are now on iWife4 or iHusband8. The motto being, if it’s new, it’s better,” she quips.
But not only does Wax bring her considerable charm and 25-year experience as a comedian, TV writer and performer to this book, she also enlists two heavyweights to help her dispense scientific and moral advice: a neuroscientist, Ashish Ranpura, and a Buddhist monk Gelong Thubten.
Wax, however, is pretty skilled herself. It is not widely known is that she holds a master’s degree in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy from Oxford University and has also written books on such matters: Sane New World and A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled.
