Lucy Hone: Why praise can stifle learning

What’s wrong with the following scenarios? Little Johnny returns from school proudly waving his spelling book – 10 out of 10 again this week – and is told, “Well done Johnny, you’re so clever.” Lanky goal-attack Tessa shoots seven goals for the Year 8 netball team cementing her reputation as the team’s “most talented” player. Fourteen-year-old Freddie masters one of Elgar’s most challenging cello concertos, reinforcing his “gifted” moniker, while Year 11 Michael’s selection for the First XV is met by universal agreement that he’s “a natural”.
