I cooked for a raucous Greek do a few years ago in Wellington. I must say, it got me pretty nervous. I get terribly flustered when taking other food cultures on at their own game. Formidable matriarchs eyed me with suspicion. I spent the first half of the evening cowering in the kitchen, terrified of the possibility of culinary sacrilege. Halfway through the evening, one of the older ones walked in holding a lamb chop and wordlessly hugged me. It reminded her of home, she said, misty eyed. I’ve never been more gratified in my life.
