Teddy bears you don't want at a picnic

Owners of Teddytime’s grey "My First Teddy" were warned last month to take it back for a refund because it's dangerous to small children.

It’s yet another black mark against a soft toy that many regard as the most loved.

The My First Teddy shed fur too easily, creating a choking hazard for infants. The official New Zealand recall notice said take it back to the store for a refund. Just imagine all those broken little hearts.

We have a solid history of taking kids’ teddy bears away because it turned out they were dangerous.

A champagne and oyster bar seems highly decadent for Christchurch. How many people in this city would go out of their way to pay top dollar for bubbles and seafood? Auckland's best food to try in just 48 hours

Love it or hate it, you can’t deny that these days, our biggest city knows how to do food and drink pretty well. With a couple of days to explore, you can sample a good spread of the impressive culinary variety Auckland has to offer.

Take in the regional fare of the city’s Chinese and Indian enclaves, just 10 minutes from the city centre. Enjoy a top chef’s modern take on the traditional cuisine of his home country, and a love letter to Tuscany staged in a grand, exquisitely redecorated historic waterfront building.

Taste gelato made by an Italian immigrant bent on breaking with old-world tradition, and slurp brilliantly fresh oysters with a tumbler of sauvignon blanc.

Recipes: They might be fat and knobbly, but yams are yummy

Popeye famously claimed “I yam what I yam”, but the vegetable version isn’t quite as easy to define. What New Zealanders know as yams originate from South America, where they are known as “oca”. What North Americans call yams are in fact varieties of sweet potato – which are different again to what are called yams in Africa and the Caribbean, not to mention the “yams” of Malaysia and Singapore, which are more like taro. Confused? Don’t be. These recipes are for those fat, knobbly tubers (the ones that look like giant sunburnt huhu grubs) that are in season right now.

Allergies are the dark side of our growing love affair with food

More and more Kiwis are developing food allergies at a time when the country’s fascination with food is soaring.

It’s a combination that can make social and work occasions awkward and embarrassing, says Allergy New Zealand adviser and former CEO Penny Jorgensen.

Jorgensen says while there is more general awareness now about food allergies, what is often underestimated is how much of a daily burden it is to sufferers and parents of children with allergies.

“It’s one of these hidden disabilities, really. People don't realise how much impact it has on life for people with the condition.

John Saker: Love of Fiordland evident in Wet Jacket Wines' label

It’s usual for a wine’s back story to be based around a strong connection to a place. Wet Jacket Wines does that, though with a difference. You won’t find any vines in Fiordland’s Wet Jacket Arm. What you will find is an achingly beautiful spot. You may also come across Greg Hay’s heart. It’s as large as a Fiordland moose (though far more real) and it seldom leaves this part of New Zealand. When it does it only goes as far as Central Otago.

Original Django Franco Nero talks Vanessa Redgrave and playing the romantic lead at age 74

He may have a reputation as one of cinema’s original monosyllabic tough guys, playing Django in Sergio Corbucci’s 1966 iconic Spaghetti Western of the same name, but today actor Franco Nero couldn’t be more warm and charming.

Dressed in a white towelling dressing gown, longish hair slung back over his shoulders, Nero, 74, is sipping a coffee between takes at a smart St Albans hotel. It’s a setting vastly more in keeping with his role in new British movie The Time of Their Lives as the love interest Alberto; all rich and raffish artist rather than grizzled gunslinger.

In the film, Nero is torn between two women: faded glamour-puss Helen, played by Joan Collins, and Pauline Collins as dowdy Priscilla. Does he think men change in their attitude towards women as they age?

“Well it depends,” he says thoughtfully. “Of course, men appreciate beauty still. But as you get older you like calmer women. Not the ones who are a pain in the ass.”

He continues: “At a certain point you want a quiet life; a gentle way. Friends of mine - they have women who yell. One uses ear plugs. He puts them in” – Nero mimes reaching to his ears – "and he doesn’t hear a thing. He pretends nothing is happening. A quiet woman as you get older is nice.“

Dr Jane Goodall warns humans on a path to total ecosystem collapse and disaster

Predictions of revolution come generally from young romantics or middle-aged cynics convinced the promises of Lenin and Castro were crushed and perverted before their true magnificence was revealed.

When they come from a Dame of the British Empire, a distinguished scientist in her 80s, at one stage a Baroness listed in Debrett’s, they carry a certain resonance.

Motueka cafe's syringe-injected doughnuts selling like hot cakes

Smoked meat is their bread and butter, but it’s the doughnuts bringing home the bacon for one Motueka eatery.

Open for just over a year in the old Hot Mama’s Cafe premises on High St, owner and chef of The Smoking Barrel Josiah Smits has created a menu based around American-style slow cooked and smoked dishes.

However, it is the popularity of its hand-made doughnuts that has created the biggest buzz.

I moved somewhere I hated for someone I love

I had never seen Cory cry before, not in the six years we had been together. We had just finished dinner at an eatery. Standing in a vacant parking lot, basking in the glow of the street lamps, he was asking me to leave behind everything I knew, with the exception of him. All of my family and friends.

Cuisine editor: Should a NZ eatery be among the World's 50 Best Restaurants?

OPINION: Melbourne was home to the World’s 50 Best Restaurant awards this year. The only other cities to have hosted this prestigious event are London (for the first 14 years) and New York (last year). Landing an event of this magnitude was game-changing for Australia. And so back in April, I set off to experience a series of events designed by Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, Tourism Australia and Visit Victoria to spread the message that Australia is a must-visit culinary destination.

Recipe: lamb, fennel & spinach pie

This pie can be made as one large pie or, as in the photo at right, 12 small ones, and I’ve provided directions for both options. The filling can be made a day ahead, as can the bread dough if it’s put in the fridge to rise slowly overnight. Once you have made the pie or pies, it’s best to cook within the hour as the dough will overproof while sitting.

LAMB, FENNEL & SPINACH PIE

Makes 12 individual or 1 large pie for 6-8 / Preparation 40 minutes plus rising time / Cooking 90 minutes

For the filling

700g lamb leg steaks or a casserole cut, cut in 2cm dice flour for dusting
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 onion, sliced
2 fennel bulbs, thinly sliced, fronds reserved and chopped
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 teaspoons fennel seeds
Grated zest and juice of 1 orange
½ cup white wine
1½ cups chicken or vegetable stock
100g spinach, shredded
2 teaspoons cornflour mixed with 2 tablespoons water (if necessary)

Lightly dust the lamb with flour seasoned with salt and freshly ground pepper. Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a wide saucepan and brown the lamb.

Remove from the pan, add the onion and fennel with the remaining oil. Cook gently until soft. Add the garlic, fennel seeds and orange zest and cook for another minute.

Recipe: Chicken & leek prassopitta

This recipe is based on a Greek leek and feta pie and uses one of the simplest pastries you can make from scratch – it can be mixed together in a bowl in a few minutes and rolls out easily. You can make the pie the day ahead, keeping it refrigerated on the tray, covered, until ready to bake.

CHICKEN & LEEK PRASSOPITTA

Serves 8 / Preparation 30 minutes / Cooking 40 minutes

For the olive oil pastry
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
¼ cup olive oil

Mix together the flour and salt in a bowl. Add the oil and Â½ cup water and stir with a wooden spoon, adding a little extra water a tablespoon at a time if necessary to bring the dough together. Take the dough out of the bowl and knead together. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside for an hour.

For the filling & to assemble
2 tablespoons olive oil, plus extra for brushing
1 large leek, halved, thinly sliced
2 cloves garlic, sliced
600g skinless chicken thighs, cut into 3cm pieces
3 tablespoons flour
1½ cups chicken stock plus extra if necessary
¼ cup pitted olives, chopped (I used Kalamata)
100g feta, crumbled
½ cup mint leaves, thinly sliced
sesame seeds to scatter
mashed potato to serve (optional)

Heat the oil in a wide saucepan, add the leek and garlic and cook gently for 5-10 minutes or until soft.

Add the chicken and cook for a few minutes, then sprinkle over the flour and cook for a couple more minutes. Add the stock and cook for 10 minutes or until cooked through, adding a little extra stock if necessary.

Stir in the olives, feta and mint leaves and season to taste. Allow to cool before using.

Preheat the oven to 200°C. Cut the dough into 2 balls, 1 slightly larger than the other. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the smaller piece very thinly to about 2mm thickness and 30cm diameter. Place on a baking paper-lined oven tray.

Pile the filling onto the dough, leaving a 2cm edge.

Roll out the bigger piece of dough, making it slightly larger than the first. Lightly brush the edge of the bottom piece with water, cover with the larger dough piece and crimp the edges together.
