Lyttleton bar celebrates end of era

It's the end of an era for one of Lyttelton's most popular bars . . . or is it?

The Porthole container bar closed its doors for the last time in the early hours of Sunday morning, shutting up shop after the land owner decided to redevelop the site. Several hundred people packed out the premises for one last hurrah.

The bar was one of the first to open in Lyttelton after the February 2011 earthquake.

"It was a really, really lovely night," bar owner Mike Dunlay said. The dance floor was full of bubbly patrons and plastic cups had to be used to cope with demand.

Dunlay recently sold the container bar on auction website TradeMe for $26,000. In a surprising twist, the successful bidder turned out to be his landlord.
